STEWART REICH a r c h i t e c t u r e 

Seattle consists of 26 branch libraries throughout the metro area, including the downtown hub library, designed by Rem Koolhaas.  The location for this particular branch library is set adjacent to Capitol Hill Community College, northeast of downtown.  The site is a 300ft x 120ft existing parking lot, which services the college and local business.

Additionally, a new subway tube station is  under construction, directly across campus, which will cut back motor vehicle usage and add to the city's focus on sustainable transportation methods.  The location of this new station is especially ideal for Capitol Hill, with the college campus close by.  This library branch will not only serve the college campus, but provide a hub for learning resources and be a central point of activity in the community.

 

The project is based on theme that drives the design.  This theme is "Technology" and society's dependence on the fragility of said technology.  The building form is extreme, synonymous to the idea of society's dependence of the progression and advancement of technology,   The massive structure is held by a forest of tall, slender,  and narrow columns, which is additionally celebrated in the center part of the "anchor" part of the building.
